BAC DSUSA Oakland A’s Fundraiser/BBQ – August 22

~ Sandy Kiyomura, Board Member ~

BAC
This will be the 10th year that BAC has hosted an A’s/fireworks game to benefit Disabled Sports USA Far West (DSUSAFW). Disabled Sports USA has a ski school at Alpine Meadows. They are a fantastic organization, providing low-cost ski instruction to individuals with physical or mental challenges. They do not receive any kind of Federal or State funding and depend on donations as well as volunteers (I was a volunteer ski instructor for over 10 years).
You will get field-level seats as well as a great view of the fireworks afterward. Last year, BAC had 200 ski club participants and it would be great if Nisei could get a few fans to support this effort. Please join me for this game. It will be fun and also benefit DSUSA.

In addition there is a pre-game BBQ. Dennis Heffley, BAC past-president gets a commercial grill into the parking lot and there will be burgers, hot dogs, salads and his famous homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Contact Sandy Kiyomura (skiyomura@gmail.com) if you are interested in attending this fun and worthwhile event, and also see the flyer in the newsletter. Link to flyer:BAC DSUSA Baseball Game Flyer in the newsletter. If you are planning on attending, then remit a check in the amount of $32/per seat to Sandy Kiyomura made payable to Nisei Ski Club.

SF STAIRWAY WALK #1 (The LAST time I will lead this hike) Sun. May 3, 2015

This hike is by far the most popular of the series. This is an ideal time of year to do it (unless our crazy weather patterns continue).  Some of the highlights of the hike are:

  • Climb the Coit Tower neighborhood that many people have been close to, but never seen.
  • Explore expertly-manicured gardens along some of the many hidden stairways in town.
  • See Diego Rivera’s political mural at the San Francisco Art Institute on Chestnut.
  • See beautiful, architecturally historic homes on Russian Hill.
  • See the curvy part of Lombard Street from a new perspective.
  • Walk the last wooden street in San Francisco.
  • See the wild parrots of the Telegraph Hill.

MEET 9:30 AM AT LEVI STRAUSS PLAZA at 1255 Battery St. (bounded by Sansome, Battery, Union and Greenwich) with water, lunch snacks, camera, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection/sweater (depending on the weather), SF map and energy. Parking meters don’t run on Sunday again, so you should have no trouble finding a spot on Sansome, Battery or their cross streets.  If all else fails, try for an all day parking lot along the Embarcadero.

Although a fairly strenuous hike of about 3-1/2 hours (but less than 5 miles), we will stop frequently for the views and snacks. We will eat lunch at a local restaurant (optional).

To sign up and get detailed meeting instructions or help with transportation, contact Hoyt Nelson at Stairs#1@niseiskiclub.org.

HURRY: Signup limited to 20 applicants so we can point out the many features of note without shouting.

NSC’s STAIRWAY HIKE IN OAKLAND ( ROCK RIDGE HILLS), SUN. Oct. 26, 2014 – NEW DATE

Nelson Stamp~Hoyt Nelson~

New hike date Oct 26, 2014

The temperature trend is going down now so let’s try for this new date. It’s a 5-mile steeple-chase through up-scale neighborhoods in the Oakland hills with even more stairs and hidden paths than in our SF stairway hikes. This hike was last run in 10-06, so it will be new to most of you.

We will meet on the E end of Broadway (near Hwy. 24) at the corner of Rock Ridge Blvd. at 10 AM. There is plenty of free parking on Rockridge. It’s about 4 blocks from the Rockridge BART (which should have bathroom facilities). From BART, go under Hwy 24, on College Av. And take the 3rd L onto Lawton.   Just across Broadway, jog R a few feet to Rockridge. We should be back to our cars by 1:30 and out from (optional) lunch by 3:00 or 3:30.

Bring warm and cool weather clothing, hat, camera, drinks and snacks and sturdy walking shoes. Except for shops on nearby College Ave., there are no places for food, drink or facilities. If we are lucky, we may find unlocked construction porta-potties along the route, but they don’t seem to be available as much lately. After the hike, we will plan to meet at a local restaurant for lunch (optional). Since we go mainly through residential areas, I have to limit size to 17 maximum, so contact Hoyt Nelson at rockridge@niseiskiclub.org soon for signups or more info.

FWSA Whistler Ski Week ~ Jan 31-Feb 7, 2015

Just in case you didn’t get onto Armand’s Jackson Hole trip, here’s an invite from the Far West Ski Association (FWSA) and BAC to go with them to Whistler, British Columbia.

Far West Ski Association

Hello Fellow BAC Skiers!

The FWSA Ski Week to Whistler BC is coming up next year, and it is going to be an AWESOME trip.  Whistler is the largest ski resort in North America with the longest runs, and a new “Peak to Peak” gondola connecting the twin peaks.  It is consistently rated the #1 Ski Resort in North American by Ski Magazine, so this will be a trip you do not want to miss.
We already have over 70 people from 8 different ski clubs in the BAC signed up, but we couldn’t help but notice that no one from your club is signed up!  We have attached the announcement flyer and a trip preference form here.  Could you please circulate these to your members and put them in your newsletter?  Thanks for helping get the word out.

Hope to see you on the slopes at Whistler! —
