NSC Berkeley Hike #2 – to see Picturesque Homes, Waterfalls, Stairs, Grand Bay Vistas

Come join us trouping through the hills of N. Berkeley while the waterfalls are still flowing freely and the flowers are starting to show up in the gardens of some of the most picturesque old homes in the bay area. I have mapped out a route based on several hikes from my favorite hike book in this area:  “Hidden Walks in the Bay Area” by Stephan Altschuler.  There is a concrete slide near the start so you may want to bring a sturdy cardboard “sled” of at least 2′ x 3′.  For more speed, firmly attach a sheet of wax paper to the bottom (not plastic cling wrap).  It’s very close to the start so you can take it back to your car if you want before the hike. The pictures in this new flyer are from the preview I did recently.

It should take about 3-4 hours and starts at the Berkeley Rose Garden (intersection of Euclid & Eunice) at 10AM.  More details will be sent later.  Bring layered clothing, camera, strong hiking shoes, water and snacks.  Bathroom facilities are at the start and at our lunch stop at Cragmont Rock Park.  There are several restaurants I can suggest for lunch after the hike and/or you can bring something for our Cragmont Park stop.  I suggest you also bring a second pair of shoes in case they get muddy.  Rain may cancel the trip.  I will keep signups informed.  For more info contact Hoyt Nelson at newsletter@niseiskiclub.org.

Nisei Ski Club Tours The Oakland Museum of California “PIXAR – 25 Years of Animation” Exhibition

Join Nisei Ski Club at this upcoming FREE event at the museum. The Oakland Museum of California presenting PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation, a major exhibition of over 500 works by the artists at Pixar Animation Studios, including drawings, paintings, and sculptures that illustrate the creative process and craftsmanship behind Pixar’s wildly successful computer-animated films. This will be a significantly enhanced presentation of the exhibition, which is returning home to Oakland after a successful worldwide tour that began at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2005. A number of significant works will be on public display for the first time, including art from Ratatouille, WALL•E, Up, and Pixar’s latest feature film, Toy Story 3. PIXAR will also include an updated, awe-inspiring version of the Pixar Artscape, a widescreen media installation. The exhibition will be accompanied by screenings of Pixar’s feature and short films; a special program of lectures, talks and workshops with Pixar artists; and a new and expanded exhibition catalogue. San Francisco Stairway Hike #4 July 25 (Sun) 2010

This is a repeat of a popular hike that hasn’t been done since July ’07.  It includes parts of  the Marina, Cow Hollow and Pacific Heights districts with lots of  grand views and magnificent architecture.  We will meet at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts at the corner of Marina and Lyon (parking in the Exploratorium lot just W of the Exploratorium – NOT at the 4 hour limit lot right next to the building) at 10AM with the usual layered clothing, camera, snacks and liquids and a little money for shopping and lunch.  “Facilities” are at the Palace and along some of the shopping streets plus a few blue port-a-potties.  Time is expected to be less than 4 hours, but we may spend time around the Palace grounds (if renovation fences are down by then) and taking in scenery here and there.  We will pass many stately homes and descend the fabulous Lyon St. stairs – surely the grandest in San Francisco (pictured below).

Signups are limited to 20 people.  For more info or to sign up, contact Hoyt Nelson at stairs4@niseiskiclub.org.  More detailed info will be sent a week before the hike (approach to the parking lot can be tricky).

CALL FOR NIKKEI MATSURI VOLUNTEERS

APR 23, 24, 25 – Fri, Sat, Sunday

NSC has a long-standing tradition of selling Chinese chicken salad at the yearly Nikkei Matsuri festival in the spring (Sunday Apr 25 this year).  This has always been our biggest money maker of the year and is needed in particular this year in view of the subsidies we paid out this year to attract new members.  We need to get started ASAP for this activity because the festival is so early this year, there are many tasks to complete and time has a way of slipping away all too quickly.
